ORV Project

For quite some time I have been toying with the idea of building a high performance very light weight car for street use. I have been a little
intimidated by such a large project. So, in the summer of 2002, I decided to make a smaller project to test my capabilities and decide whether to tackle a full blown vehicle. I
decided to make a rather low powered ORV / Go-Kart for use by the family. I chose to attempt some of the more difficult aspects of a car, i.e. suspension,
rack and pinion steering, side by side seating….
While it won’t be completed until early in 2003, here are some pictures
showing my progress to date:
Finished it up in April, 03 Still under construction. Bucket seats are from Summit Racing. The floor is still missing as are the brake and gas pedels. Steering wheel is from a go-kart supply company.
It is all my own design ( for what that is worth ) except that I used scaled down dimensions for the front suspension from a book I bought by Ron Champion called "Build Your Own Sports Car." Wheels came from a ATV supply store. Running 22" on the back and 19" on the front. I tig welded the frame. It is made of 3/4", 1" and 1 1/4" 16 gage welded steel tubing. The weight is about 280lb, but this will end up closer to 300lb by the time I am done. The steering rack came from a sand rail. The front suspension utilized independent unequal length A-arms. My geometery is not perfect, but should be OK. All painted and ready to go. The engine is a 10 Hp Tecumseh. While no big power house, it should make it move right along. Notice the centrifugal clutch and drum brakes. These did not work out. I had to replace the centrifugal clutch and drum brakes. The drum brakes were to small, so I bought some Comet calipers and made my own 7" disks. I went to a Comet Torque Converter rated to 16Hp. Can replace the motor with a bigger on in the future....
